Sustainable development is a form of ¡§development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs¡¨. It is concerned with the relationship between economic activities, environmental quality and social equity.

Urban development is closely linked with its transportation development. Rail-served transportation has been considered as a sustainable mode of mobility. The enhancement in mobility of local and non-local peoples will inevitably affect the development of linear city and its surrounding hinterland. How sustainable development can be ensured in such development becomes an important question for all stakeholders concerned.

Upon the conceptual foundation of sustainable and livable cities, this research aims to map out feasible development visions for the Kam Tin - Pat Heung area, where the new West Rail runs across a rural landscape with rich cultural heritage and a sensitive natural environment. We also hope to found out a set of SD indicators, future developments and planning protocols for rail-served urban communities.
